Lough Derg FC Notes Sun 16 Sept 2012
A Registration night for this season’s club members and players is on at St Anne’s Community College, Killaloe at 7.30pm on Wednesday 19 September.
A walkabout at Clarisford, Killaloe last Sunday 9 September led by Keith Wood and other members of the Soccer, Rugby and Scouts (who are jointly developing together the Clarisford facility) saw a great turnout.
It was a great opportunity that was availed of by many members of the three clubs to see the work that has been done over the past few months and to see this facility taking shape.
A great omen for the future for sure was the co-operation of the weather on the day!
Despite five fixtures being scheduled for Wedneday 12th to Sunday 16th last, only one of the Lough Derg FC (Ballina/Killaloe) games went ahead.
The LDFC Mens Junior B team travelled away to play last Sunday against Cloughjordan in an 11.30am morning North Tipperary & District League (NT&DL) division 3 league game. After falling behind to a Cloughjordan goal, the Ballina/Killaloe side battled throughout to get on level terms.
Noel McInerney scored for LDFC but in the second half Cloughjordan scored two more to win 3-1. Head coach Willie Mcinerney and assistant Mike Flynn can be encouraged that Lough Derg created a number of half-chances and the hometeam’s crossbar kept out a Keith Stritch attempt.
The LDFC Mens B team that lined out against Cloughjordan was: Sean Hickey, Brian McInerney, Kieran Larkin, Joe English, William Carroll, Eric Monaghan, Mark McInerney, Ciaran Downing, Keith Strich, Keith Conway, Noel McInerney. Subs used: Des Morgan and Jamie Buckley.
A home FAI Junior cup fixture for the A team fell foul of the weather and a visit by Glengoole United for a 2.30pm afternoon game was cancelled after heavy rain on Sunday morning.
North Tipperary Schoolchildren’s Football League (NTSFL) season opening mid-week home game for the Lakers u13s against Ballymackey was postponed as were Saturday’s (first games of the season too) for the u12s at home versus BT Harps and an away trip to Nenagh Celtic for the u14s.
Fixtures for the week ending Sunday September available at the time of going to press are:
NTSFL, Saturday 22 September, u13 Premier, Birdhill v Lough Derg, 11.00am and u15 division 1, Lough Derg V Arra Rovers at 12.45pm at Clarisford, Killaloe.
NT&DL fixtures at the time of going to press were not notified but will be uploaded Monday morning 17 September.
A special word of thanks is due to a number of youth team and junior b coaches and players, Emmet Hanly and Noel McInerney for undertaking a spring clean-up around our storage containers at our Bennys Field, Ballina, pitch this past weekend. A parent (of one of our players Sean) Nelius Hickey is also to be thanked most sincerley for his help.
Please see the club website here at www.loughdergfc.ie for regular updates of all news, fixtures, results and more.

Our picture shows our very own local Killaloe native and Irish/Munster rugby legend Keith Wood leading the way at the walkabout at the tour Clarisford Community development project on Sunday 9 September last; where members of the 3 clubs involved Soccer, Rugby and Scouts were able to see the work done to date and work still in progress.

Lough Derg FC notes Sun 23 Sept ’12
The ever popular improver academy for boys and girls aged u6 to u10 begins this Saturday 29 September at 10.00am (to 11.30am) at St Anne’s Community College, Killaloe.
Parents are reminded that they must stay in attendance during the session and players are to be togged out in full kit with boots and shin pads as well as bringing a bottle of water. Importantly, they must be in juniors at school since September 2012 to register and take part.
The two club junior mens teams were in action on Sunday 23. In Munster Junior Cup, preliminary round action Cloughjordan won 2-1 against visiting Lough Derg A and in a NT&DL division 3 league game Lough Derg B lost 1-2 against Gurtagarry.
In the home game the junior Lakers B’s went behind on eight minutes and thought they had come back on equal terms on eighteen minutes when Keith Stritch scored from the penalty spot. However, the referee had the kick re-taken for an infringement when a home player ran into the box as the kicker was striking his shot. The second spot kick was missed.
After conceding a second, Lough Derg continued to harry their opposition and went all out looking for a goal and were rewarded with twenty minutes to go when Mark McInerney scored a header from a corner to pile more pressure on the visitors. Despite a great effort in trying to get an equaliser, LDFC’s lads just weren’t able to find the equaliser.
In a preliminary round cup game the Junior A team travelled to Cloughjordan, losing 1-2. On Saturday the Ballina/Killaloe youth u18s enjoyed a day off as they had no scheduled game.
Meanwhile, in Saturday 22, NTSFL action, Lough Derg’s u15s hosted near neighbours Arra Rovers from Portroe at Clarisford, Killaloe, in a lunch-time game played in wonderful conditions with a blue sky overhead and no-sign of winter soccer’s dreaded clouds or rain showers.
This correspondent (when typing game notes during the match) smiled as the thought of having seen many, many ”wet game days” in the ten years since the clubs founding in January 2002 came to mind. And thinking that the folks playing in the SRS golf classic had surely swung the dial in favour of good weather for the day!
Arra and Lough Derg traded goals and chances throughout; LDFC unlucky in ending up losing this very entertaining tie 3-4. After going in tied at one each at the break the second half was only a few minutes old when Rovers went ahead. Immediately though from the tip off Lough Derg went on the attack and were lucky not to score after hitting the visitors post.
Fifteen minutes into the second half an advancing Arra player lobbed a shot over an advancing Lough Derg keeper to go further ahead.
Lough Derg continued to pepper the visitors goal with shots from in and outside the box and a few times had great success in playing direct over the top-ball for the centre forwards to run onto to shoot or to set up a fellow team mates for a goal scoring opportunity.
Long serving Lough Derg coach Donagh 0′ Sullivan (who has worked with many of this team since u10s) can be very pleased with the effort he saw.
The u13 Lakers Saturday 22, 11.00 am away premier league game against Birdhil FCl was postponed prior to game day by the league and is to be rescheduled.
The only fixtures for Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 September known at the time of writing on Sunday evening 23 September are:
NTSFL Saturday 29 September:
U14 division 1
Lough Derg V Moneygall 12.30pm
U16 division 1
Lough Derg V Shannon Rangers at 11am
Updates when notified will appear here on the news pages of the club website, www.loughdergfc.ie.
